Raging Tiger: The Second Korean War Review
Raging Tiger is a RTS simulation that will have any serious tactical combat fan foaming at the mouth with what seems like unlimited options for each campaign. You the commander will be bombarded with choices for armament and ways to move them. Furthermore you can micro-manage these units to really add realism to the commanding simulation. The options seem never ending which will have any player new to the genre confused for sure. A 130+ page manual provides a wealth of information, but understanding everything after one read through is expecting way too much. Those familiar with this type of game may find this a bit easier.
Set in the near future Korea is selling uranium for who knows what. The point is they are selling it to countries without hesitation. This brings The U.S into the fray and we must stop this fiasco. You will have a ton of infantry, armored vehicles, and aircraft to carry out your objectives. You will be able to provide orders, paths to follow, firing missions, and even more micro-manageable tasks that will make this simulation very involved. You will experience the unpredictable nature of the modern battlefield, including civilians, guerillas, nuclear biological chemical warfare, Special Forces, and more.
Those new to the weapons, vehicles, aircraft, etc., will be pleased to know that you can actually see a picture of the unit with all its capabilities. These include speed, firepower, effective range, variants, capacity, and armaments. These are given for both sides of the conflict.
The game is best played at a color resolution of 24bit or LOWER. This means this title is not going to be pretty at all. The sound is just plain terrible. Now that being said, this is more of a simulation where you are commanding all these units from a comfortable HQ base I'm sure. So in all reality you would not hear so much as a whisper. The basic sound effects are just so you kind of get a feel that action is taking place. My point is this. Do you need eye-popping graphics or awesome sound effects to enjoy this game? My answer is I think not. Will you need masters in combat tactical planning? Well it might help.
Overall based on the scoring details one might think that this game is one left for the shelf. I must stress that for those who strive for this type of game play it is a must have. You really feel like you are commanding the troops and calling all the shots. The game offers so much that anyone who has played these types of games before will probably love it. If you have armored task force you can even import missions form ATF as well. I do not own ATF so I'm not sure how that plays out, but it sounds to me that adds re-playability for sure. Those Multiplayer fans will be happy to know that it's backwards compatible with ATF so if both players have the scenarios you want to play you surely can battle them out. You can play via the Internet and on a LAN.
| Review Scoring Details for Raging Tiger the Second Korean War |
Gameplay: 7
There are almost
too many options. Once you understand the game and commands it’s not too
terrible, but the learning curve is really steep. You really need a lot of time
to fully grasp this title especially if you are not a die-hard military RTS fan.
Graphics: 6.5
2-D and 24bit.
What more do I need to say. You don't need eye-popping graphics for this genre,
but when you compare to other titles, this is very old school.
Sound: 5
We have heard
these before as in twenty years ago.
Difficulty: Hard
A 130+ page
manual. Need I say more?
Concept: 6.5
A RTS similar to
what we have seen before.
Multiplayer:
At time of review
could not establish an online game. Once a community develops, should provide
tons of re-playability.
Overall: 7.5
Though some of
the scoring details may show an average of a lower score, I feel that the game's
potential and tons of options merit a higher overall score.
