Quake III: Gold Edition Review
Id and Activison has taken two great FPS titles and packaged the conveniently in one box. Quake III Arena and Quake III Team Arena. Great marketing ploy if you haven’t already purchased the games. If you already have both titles unfortunately nothing new here. If you have been like myself and still playing Quake 2 multiplayer with your friends, this is a good reason to now go pick up the gold release…. 2for1 how can that be bad?
The graphics are beautiful. The new designed environments and characters will give gamers the eye candy they crave. Rendering, lighting, sound effects, ease of getting started its all here.
If you are new to the arena format, this will give you an idea. Gone are the mazes and the 100’s of monsters you have to defeat to get to the next level. Now it’s basically a frag fest in a futuristic gladiator type of realm. The maps are a bit smaller in the Q3A game but big enough to hide and open up a can of whoop ass on your opponents. Q3TA provides a bit more than just a kill or be killed situation. There are 4 game types that are played as teams. Capture the flag, Capture one flag, Overload, and Harvester. The maps in Team Arena are much bigger as one can imagine because the scope of the games are more robust.
I have to agree with Michael on these reviews. Rather then say the same things twice, I highly recommend these links.

Both games offer excellent multiplayer capabilities. Both LAN and Internet are a snap to get started. I mostly liked the fact that you didn’t have to go to another site like Gamespy or the zone to get on with the killing.
Again if you are a serious Quake fan hoping the whole gold thing meant something new we haven’t seen yet…sorry to disappoint. But if you have been putting off getting either arena game, now is a great time. Not to mention this would make a great stocking stuffer for any First Person Shooter fan!
