NASCAR 2000 Review
Nope, not talking about the latest dance craze. This is about flags flying, cars running, and petal to the metal action. EA SPORTS™ has unleashed NASCAR 2000 and the action is fast-paced and furious. Weaving in and out of a congested field, battling for position, drafting and then the run for the checkered flag. Think you have the right stuff - this game will challenge that notion.
This game lacks very little. The spin-outs will disorient though the controls are quite accurate, giving gamers maximum control in an out-of-control scenario.
The options package soars on this program.
You begin by choosing your mode of play from three options: Single player, Race against the King, or Championship Season. In the single player, single race weekend, you are confronted with more options - which allow you to select your car and driver, select the track, and vary the game options (such as dumb down the competition). There are 18 tracks to choose from, stemming from Atlanta Motor Speedway to Watkins Glen. Thirty-three drivers and their rides (cars) are represented, including Jeff Gordon, Ernie Irvan, Dale Earnhardt, Rusty Wallace and the Petty boys.
If you opt to head straight for the track, you'll begin as Steve Park at the Atlanta Motor Speedway. Once you've selected who you want to represent you in the game, and the race course you will be challenging, head to the track.
Again, you are confronted with more options. You can begin in the garage and set up your car any way you see fit. You can adjust the tire pressure, shocks, weight distribution, wedge (which controls car weight in the corners), gear ratio, wheel camber (tilt of the tires - which is necessary for running on oval tracks), transmission, steering lock, amount of fuel you want to carry, spoiler and trackbar. Whew! For those who may not know a lot about setting up a race car, EA SPORTS™ provides a handy guide to help. On-screen prompts and the manual will tell you exactly what you are messing up.
After the garage, you hit the track for a few practice laps. This is an excellent opportunity to test your car and to figure out strategy for the race. There is a first qualifying round. You need to clock the fastest time around the track, hoping for the pole position in the race, but settling for making the top 25 and qualifying for the event. If you don't make it, or want to improve your position, head back to the garage, tweak the car and run it in a second practice. There is a second qualifying round. Happy Hour, which is yet another - and final - opportunity to test and tweak your car. After that, the flag goes up and the race is on.
EA SPORTS™ has a solid ride on its hands with this title. The options are incredible, the graphics are crisp and game play is seamless. The sounds are what one would expect from the environment. There are only two ways to handle the car, with the keyboard or the steering wheel controllers. Lacking the latter, the keyboard still works fine, and the car is easy to control - well, not exactly easy but unlike Formula 99 from Psygnosis, the controls are not sluggish. The car actually responds to commands and zips around the track easily.
After guiding one of these stock cars through the turmoil of a race, driving down the interstate at 65 (Ok, 70 ... Maybe 72 …) seems rather tame.
This program is rated for everyone and supports multiplayer action.
The multiplayer program allows for LAN gaming or over the Internet. Dare to challenge all comers. Then create your own league through the interface provided with the game package. Just released, the wanna-be's (those who will eventually join) are few, but action will increase with game sales.
Install: Medium. The screen is blank during install, not adding to the excitement, but wait - like an engine just turning over, the action is only beginning.
Gameplay: 9. Smooth, intense and walking the fine line that high-powered machines tread between control and total chaos.
Graphics: 9. Yep, even the pit crews, sporting polygonal framework are active and cool to look at.
Sound: 9. Intense and what one would expect from such a game.
Difficulty: 9. You are talking about a high-powered, high-performance vehicle, speeding around the track at speeds in excess of 150 miles per hour - do you expect this to be easy?
Concept: 8. Ok, this is yet another racing game, but what EA SPORTS™ lends to the program is intensity.
Overall: 9. This is an andrenaline rush.
