A Look at Little Nemo: The Dream Master

In September of 1990, Capcom released a movie and comic strip tie-in game that a lot of older gamers remember completely.  Little Nemo: The Dream Master was a 2D sidescroller where players took control of Nemo in Slumberland.  Nemo, clad in pajamas and toting a bottomless sack of candy, must travel through Slumberland while avoiding enemies and collecting keys. The most unique gameplay element in Little Nemo was assuming an animal’s form and using their abilities to explore.  While this notion may seem like a no-frills, outdated addition to the game’s mechanics, in Nemo’s time it was completely exhilarating and original. Nemo himself was a little boy sleeping in his bed.  The game opens that way.  He stands up, looks out the window and sees an approaching airship.  A clown messenger greets Nemo and whisks him away to Slumberland.  From there, players must conquer each dreamscape as it approaches by way of collected keys.  What unfolds is an adventure of mystery, increasingly difficult obstacles and some downright 8-bit frights. But what’s worth exploring isn’t necessarily the gameplay or presentation of Little Nemo, it’s the bed.  The bed? Yes, the bed. Read More

Nintendo Download - 11/09/09 - Load Up on Excitebike Action, Musical Plankton and More

At long last, it's the WiiWare moment you've all been waiting for... unless the moment you were waiting for is Castlevania, that is. Nay, but as promised, Excitebike: World Rally is now available for download on WiiWare for 1,000 Wii Points. There's even more oldschool fun with Frogger Returns, which costs only half of what Excitebike does, and you can round out an even twenty bucks by getting Dragon Master Spell Caster from Stickmen Studios for another 500 Wii Points. DSiWare has an abundance of titles as well, though five of them are Electroplankton titles, each 200 DSi Points. If you want something with a bigger bang, however, Hudson has you covered with the eight-player Bomberman Blitz for 500 Wii Points. Finally, Virtual Console sees two new releases in the form of Cybernoid for the Commodore 64 and the well-renowned Wonder Boy III: The Dragon's Trap for the SEGA Master System, each commanding 500 Wii Points. For more info on each of today's 11 titles, check out the press release after the cut. Read More

Wii-kly Update - 01/26/09: Wonder Boy in Monster Land and Niki - Rock 'n' Ball

This looks like it might be a slow week for gaming, kicking off with but a mere two games added to the Wii-kly Update. Striking out on its lonesome into the wilds of WiiWare is Niki - Rock 'n' Ball, which at least has the benefit of being a two-player title that's only 500 Wii Points. But in spite of the name, it sounds like it may be a sort of oldschool action or platforming title. You can even play with a Wii style or use oldschool controls. The other release this week is one from the legendary Wonder Boy series. While the first one beget what we know as Adventure Island, this sequel is drastically different, with the main character taking up sword and doing a bit more exploration to reach his goals. But for only 500 Wii points, there's nothing wrong with a little experimentation. More details on each are available in the press release. Read More
