THQ Announces Fall Release for Viva Piñata: Pocket Paradise on DS

Fans of Viva Piñata will be able to double their fun this Fall, as THQ has announced a special DS-exclusive version of the franchise for release this Fall. The new version is said to take advantage of the touchscreen and stylus, making navigation of the garden easier than ever. "Nintendo DS is the perfect platform for the Viva Pinata franchise because players can have direct interaction with the environment and their pinatas using the stylus," said Bob Aniello, senior vice president of worldwide marketing, THQ. "We are thrilled to introduce Microsoft's critically-acclaimed Viva Pinata series to an entirely new segment of the gaming community." The DS version sees players inhabit an abandoned garden on Piñata Island, which leads to their task of turning it into a paradise perfect for partying piñatas. There will be seven all-new piñata species, each with new requirements, houses, and cut-scenes. The game also includes 12 full-motion video clips that serve as tutorials, featuring the stars of the 4Kids TV show, such as Hudson Horstashio, Fergy Fudgehog, and Paulie Pretztail. The game will also include a new Playground mode to allow the creation of a lush garden in a short period of time. Plus, certain items and piñatas are only obtainable through the Nintendo DS local wireless connection, where friends can transfer new items to one another. And thus continues the odd relationship between Microsoft, Rare, and Nintendo. You know, all you people wanting Goldeneye back would probably have a lot more luck if you begged for it to just be on the DS. Read More

Microsoft Anticipates 7 Platinum Sellers this Holiday

Microsoft Anticipates 7 Platinum Sellers this Holiday

Speaking in an interview with Next-gen.biz regarding the recently confirmed Xbox 360 Arcade Bundle and Microsoft's family initiative, Microsoft Group Product Manager Aaron Greenberg made the following statement. "It's the games that sell the systems and we feel pretty confident in our games lineup. Just this one holiday we anticipate that we'll have at least seven titles that will each sell over a million units each. I don't think any other platform will even come close to that, so having the big blockbuster games will definitely continue to help drive system sales for us." With the release of Halo 3 in the rear-view mirror, there are only three more Microsoft-published Xbox 360 titles slated for release this holiday season: Viva Pinata Party Animals, Scene It? and Mass Effect. Of those three, only Mass Effect is likely to approach or surpass one million units sold, save a massive shift in the console's demographic. Outside of first party offerings, there are only a few third party exclusives slated for the Xbox 360 this holiday, including Naruto Rise of the Ninja and Virtua Fighter 5, but none of them are expected to reach platinum status. The vast majority of the games that are expected to hit numbers in the neighborhood of a million are multiplatform third party games like Assassin's Creed, Call of Duty 4, Need for Speed: Pro Street, Guitar Hero III, and possibly Rock Band, WWE SmackDown! vs. Raw 2008 and The Simpson's game. Since these games are available for the competition as well as the 360, it's difficult to gauge just how much they contribute to a consumer's decision to pick one console over another. Read More

LucasArts Brings Star Wars: The Force Unleashed to Wii

LucasArts Brings Star Wars: The Force Unleashed to Wii

According to CVG, LucasArts will be bringing the already announced Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 title Star Wars: The Force Unleashed to Nintendo Wii. The game will allow players to wield in-game lightsabers with the Wii-mote and employ the powers of the Force with the nunchuck. The Wii version of the game will feature at least one exclusive mode, which allows two players to go head-to-head with each other (assumingly, in lightsaber duels). Meanwhile, the story takes place between Star Wars: Episode III: Revenge of the Sith and Episode IV: A New Hope. "Wii is a great platform for The Force Unleashed, because the console's motion-oriented controllers really bring the game to life," said Jim Ward, president of LucasArts. "We've worked hard to make the Wii version of the game unique in order to truly let you unleash the Force." The Force Unleashed for Wii is in development by Krome Studio, the same company behind games like The Legend of Spyro: The Eternal Night, Viva Pinata Party Animals and Hellboy. Expect more soon.
