SmackDown Vs. Raw 2011 Gets Another THQ Online Pass

THQ has followed in the footsteps of EA's sports division, creating their own version of the publisher's Online Pass. The pass discourages players for buying a game used, requiring them to shell out for extra features to play against others online, unless they buy a sealed copy of the game including a special one-time-use code. THQ first made use of the code with UFC Undisputed 2010, released earlier this year. Now, they're doing it again for WWE SmackDown vs. Raw 2011, but this time, upping the cost of the pass to $10, or 800 Microsoft points. Why? Because those who buy the game used won't just be able to play online, they won't even get the game's entire roster. Read More

THQ Pins Poor UFC Sales on Red Dead Redemption

Party-pooper When the UFC Unleashed debuted last year it was surprise smash, chalking up healthy sales and a very positive critical reception. This year UFC Undisputed 2010 was hoping to achieve the same, and given the fact that it was a bigger and better version of last year's game the outcome seemed almost certain. At last, THQ would have their very own Madden, an annual franchise that would make them boatloads of cash every year. But then a funny thing happened on the way to the bank, Undisputed underperformed and THQ execs were left scrambling for reasons why their game lost so much momentum. Their answer? It's all John Marston's fault. Justifications after the break. Read More

And not a moment too soon, as THQ is preparing a sequel for release this May. The new game (which bears a slight name change, with the year now at the end of the title) will be available on May 25th, a few days before the 2nd UFC Fan Expo kicks off for the May 29th Las Vegas pay per view event, UFC 114. And featured on this year's cover (seen at right, click to enlarge) is none other than Brock Lesnar, who some might recognize from the front of another THQ game-- WWE SmackDown! Here Comes the Pain. The 2010 edition "has also introduced a new sway and posture system to enhance a player's ability to defend and deliver coups-de-grace attacks, as well as incorporated new moves from the sambo, karate, and Greco-Roman wrestling disciplines."
