Growing up during the arcade renaissance of the 1990s, I have a lot of memories of the old beat-em-up genre. Though designed to guzzle quarters, there was something incredibly addicting about these simple, local, and primitive co-op experiences that pitted you and a few fellow arcadegoers against a variable armada of robots, ninjas, drones, and large bosses. Beat-em-ups were created by Japanese teams for several high-profile franchises of the time, including The Simpsons, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Bucky O'Hare, and X-Men. All of these games were ridiculously unfair - especially to the kids with the fewest quarters to burn - but that was part of their charm. X-Men was unique among beat-em-ups for its mechanics as well as its scale (up to six simultaneous players), and now it's making a long overdue comeback on download services. Read More

Rumor: South Park Details Revealed

When Microsoft announced they were bringing a new South Park game to Xbox Live Arcade, people didn't exactly jump for joy. For one thing, a licensed game usually carries the stigma far ahead of its release that it will ultimately not be very good. For another, the previous South Park games weren't exactly hits. So here's what's been said to be revealed so far; I don't really know how credible this site is, so I'm stamping it as a "rumor" for now. One, it will be the first game published under the Xbox Live Productions label, Microsoft's new first-party partnership initiative for XBL Arcade content. Two, "South Park" will be a strategy game, according to That doesn't tell us much, except that worries of a sequel to Acclaim's not-so-acclaimed "South Park" first-person-shooter can probably be put to rest. -- Onex Gaming ...strategy? Well, when you look at the other genres the license has been used for, why not?
