Sony Not Bringing 3D to Handhelds

As if Nintendo didn't already have a stranglehold on the handheld market the company tightened their grip even further with the reveal of the 3DS at E3. Most of the gaming world is positively gushing over the device, and the consensus is that Nintendo has set themselves up for another huge success in the portable console arena. Now eyes turn to Sony to see what they'll do in response to the 3DS' earth-shattering debut. The response, as it turns out, is "not much." Join us after the break as we eulogize the PSP. Read More

Nintendo Sells the Most New Games

The latest annual report of GameStop's vendor relations revealed this week that Nintendo publishes the largest portion of new games they sell by a sizable margin. This is another sign of Nintendo's uncanny ability to maintain strong game sales and how it has changed the balance of market share in the industry. 23 percent of GameStop's non-used games are Nintendo-published titles. The closest competitor is Sony with 17 percent of the share. From there it goes down to Microsoft and Eletronic Arts (12 percent each) and then Activision with 11 percent. These five companies make up 75 percent of GameStop's new games business. In 2006 things were very different. Microsoft held the top spot with 14 percent, and collectively the top 10 made up only 65 percent of GameStop's new games business. Today it's 85 percent. It is very possible that Nintendo is the shifting force in those numbers. Read More

The Games That Don't Install Well on NXE, and How Much Room It Takes for Those That Do

One of the most hyped features (somewhere after Netflix and Avatars) of the New Xbox Experience is the ability to install games to the Xbox 360's hard drive. However, as Halo 3 has taught us, it's not quite a perfect procedure. In fact, it would seem that there is a small number of titles which don't really see any improvement when installed, thanks to the way the developers designed them. According to Destructoid, these titles are Big Bumpin', College Hoops 2k7, Pocket Bike Racers, Sneak King, Crackdown, Dead or Alive Xtreme 2, and Quake II from the Quake IV Bonus Disc (according to NeoGAF). Or, to put it in a different perspective, it's the three Burger King promo games, an out-of-date basketball game, a game most people bought just to get into the Halo 3 beta, and a game most people probably don't want anyone else knowing they own, anyway. Takes a bit of the sting out of it, I figure. So now we know which ones don't work. But of those that do work, how much space will they take up? This is a question that's no doubt on the minds of many... or at least, however many bought a 360 with a 20GB hard drive. Fortunately, Sean has compiled a list over at NeoGAF which answers that very question, along with a few notes here and there about the reduction in load times. However, he notes "I can't possibly verify all of these sizes/notes, just going off of what people tell me. If there's an error please correct it and be nice about it." For your Kombo Konvenience, the list is posted right after the kut... er, cut. Whew, that was close. Read More

Ted Nugent Blasts onto Guitar Hero with Guns Blazing

I may not like his politics, and to be honest, I don't really like his music, either. But hey, this is America. We're free to disagree on things like war, gun control and guitar players. Right, Ted? Activision today announced Ted Nugent will bring his gun-totin', deer-killin' persona to Guitar Hero World Tour. This comes from Activision's press release: Multi-platinum guitar icon, best-selling author and outspoken activist, Ted Nugent will lend his voice and likeness to Guitar Hero World Tour, joining the all-star cast of rock legends to be featured in the game including Jimi Hendrix, Ozzy Osbourne and Sting. Aspiring axe shredders will be able to challenge "The Nuge" in an epic guitar duel, tear up the six string as the music icon's in-game character or jam alongside the Motor City Madman as he rocks his 1975 smash hit "Stranglehold." Recognized as the world's leading guitar showman, Nugent's no-holds-barred career spans five decades of multi-platinum sales exceeding 35 million albums. -- Activision World's leading guitar showman, Activision? Obviously, you've never beheld the mastery of Jason Becker or Jeff Loomis. But I suppose we're free to disagree about that, too. Guitar Hero World Tour is set to rock Oct. 26. Read More
