After months of waiting, SEGA has finally given us the answers which we have sought ever since they uttered the words "Project Needlemouse." Last night, GameSpot debuted the following trailer from SEGA: It appears that the rumors were indeed true: Project Needlemouse is indeed Sonic the Hedgehog 4, and it is episodic content in the fashion seen with Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and Sonic & Knuckles (and, one might suppose, Sonic 2). SEGA Says Quality of Sonic Titles Will "Be Fixed Over Time"

Just as he had in his golden years across many a field and mountain, Sonic has found himself running downhill at a steady pace in recent years. Only instead of him actually running down the slopes and corkscrews of his world, it was his games that were going downhill. This arguably peaked in 2006, when the would-be series reboot Sonic the Hedgehog was released. Characters with awkward proportions, a complicated storyline featuring romance between a human princess and the blue blur himself, and worst of all, frustrating gameplay did little to gain the favor of anyone but the hardest of hardcore fans. Of this period in time, Sean Ratcliffe, VP of Marketing for SEGA of America, admit to GameDaily that at the time, the criticism was "warranted," but that SEGA was concerned, spending "a lot of time and effort...discussing how we develop Sonic."
