Taking Down The Clown: A Look Back At Aero The Acro-Bat

It seems as if every console generation produces a single break-out character that other developers and publishers chase with me-too clones.  The Nintendo Entertainment System years produced one of gaming's biggest stars - Super Mario himself - that led to a glut of friendly, happy mascot-based action platformers.  Sega's take on the format for the Sega Genesis, Sonic the Hedgehog, added radical attitude traits to the formula, and suddenly every publisher had to have a mascot cartoon character with attitude.  The 16-bit years gave us plenty of forgotten and also-ran characters in that style such as Bubsy the Bobcat, Awesome Possum, and Rocky Rodent, but the one character who stood out from the pack - and, strangely enough, one character who was never intended to run with that pack in the first place -  was Sunsoft's Aero the Acro-Bat.  Aero's journey brought him some success across multiple platforms and eventual re-releases with sequels and spin-off adventures.  When stacked against the competition chasing Sonic's speedy shoes, Aero managed to creatively succeed in an otherwise overcrowded marketplace. Sonic 4's Story and Announcement's Effect on SEGA Stock

Here's your latest Project Nee-- er, I mean, Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode 1 news for the day. To start, it seems that the proper announcement of the game has already yielded good fortune for SEGA. According to TSSZ News, "the Dow Jones Industrial Average closing today down more than 268 points and flirting with sub 10,000 territory for the first time in a few months, the stock for Sega Sammy Holdings was up on the Sonic 4 announcement." Nintendo Download - 2/1/10: Swing True, Bet Big and Vanquish Evil with New Game Downloads

Not a huge week in the Nintendo Download to start out the month of February, at least not in scope. In terms of quantity, on the other hand, nine isn't so bad. Golfers on the go can download the new Express version of True Swing Golf on the DSi, as well as staples such as 5 in 1 Solitaire and DOWNTOWN TEXAS HOLD'EM. The brain-training types have Move your Brain Rollway Puzzle, and Legends of Exidia seems like just the thing for traditional gamers. WiiWare also has 5 in 1 Solitaire, plus an action-puzzler in Tumblebugs 2. But odds are, most eyes are going to be on the fifth and final chapter of Tales of Monkey Island. And finally, from the oldschool comes one of the stars of the upcoming Sonic & SEGA All-Stars Racing, Alex Kidd, as he takes on the legions of ninja which inhabit Shinobi World. Interestingly enough, this Master System game was never released in Japan. For full descriptions of each game, check out the press release that follows after the cut. Read More

Nintendo's First-Quarter 2010 Lineup Revealed

Today, Nintendo issued a press release which reveals their lineup for the first quarter of 2010, which includes Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver, whose box art can be seen above, as well as new pink and blue Wii Remote/MotionPlus packages on February 14th. "Along with the current White and Black versions of the controller, now every player in four-player matches can have his or her own color." Of course, the lineup isn't limited to first-party offerings, though many of the "dates" posted are rather vague, including "March," "Spring," "Q1," and in the case of No More Heroes 2: Desperate Struggle, "late January." Hit the jump for the full press release. Read More

Nintendo Reveals First- and Third-Party Holiday Lineup

Nintendo has released the planned publishing schedule as it stands for the Wii and Nintendo DS/DSi, from both themselves and their third-parties. A lot of definite dates are not set in, instead referenced as "Fall," "Holiday," or "November," for example, but nonetheless serves to give us an idea of what the coming months will bring. "This extensive lineup will keep players busy throughout the fall and into 2010," said Cammie Dunaway, Nintendo of America's executive vice president of Sales & Marketing. "Shoppers know that Nintendo offers fun for everyone in the household." Nintendo also mentions the upcoming black Wii Remote, Nunchuk, and MotionPlus as being available "this holiday season," though they don't get any more specific than that. Hit the jump for the full press release and list of games that will become available. Read More

Nintendo Download - 6.29.09: It's No Reel Fantasy: Water, Sudoku, and Silver Stars Can Boost You

Before there was Sonic the Hedgehog, blazing trails for SEGA as the company's mascot, there was Alex Kidd. Or was there? The strange boy with the monkey-like features is often regarded as SEGA's pre-Sonic mascot, but according to IGN, that is only unofficially. Officially, it was the sentient spaceship who starred in the Fantasy Zone games, Opa-Opa, who carried the company's banner. And today, that very same mascot's second title for the Master System is our sole Virtual Console release. Other goodies for download today include the 500 DSi Point Sudoku Master by Hudson, as every DS unit needs Sudoku on it. Every. Single. One. WiiWare has a triple threat, and two of them are all wet. Water Warfare from Hudson is a deathmatch-- better make that "wet match"-- for up to 8 players. If you have that many people together and they all pay you a dollar to play, you'll have recovered your costs. 500 Wii Points can get you Natsume's Reel Fishing Challenge. Finally, 500 more points will bring you Agetec's Silver Star Reversi, whose description is so vague, I really have no idea what it's about. See for yourself, along with details for the rest, after the cut. Read More

Nintendo's Full Q1 Line-up for North America

A few days ago, we brought you Nintendo's full first-quarter lineup for the UK (or possibly more of Europe; it came from Nintendo UK, and they didn't really elaborate much). Today, we have the full first-quarter lineup for North America, which has some minor differences here and there. One note: Is "New Play Control!" seriously what they're looking at calling the "Play on Wii" lineup? Read More
