E3 2010: Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode 1 Hands-On

Sonic & Knuckles was released in 1994. Many consider it the last good Sonic game to date. After that, Sonic 3D Blast began the long downfall followed by the his total absence from the Saturn. Sonic Adventure – while flawed and rushed – was a good start into 3D. Unfortunately, it would arguably be the last. Sonic last decade has been hell, littered with unfinished dribble rushed for Christmas launches, and tailored to kids rather than everyone. Many (including myself) believed Sonic the Hedgehog 4 would follow the same fate. Having played all the demo stages available, I believe it's safe to say that I was wrong. Sonic 4 is awesome. Media: SEGA Reveals Sonic Classic Collection for DS

It appears that some of the rumors and theories surrounding the registration of "Sonic Classic Collection" with the BBFC were indeed true after all. Today, SEGA Europe announced the title, which will be hitting their shelves in March 2010; as of this writing, SEGA America has yet to say anything about a release over here. It brings together the four main SEGA Genesis Sonic titles, "optimised to take full advantage of the Nintendo DS system" by letting players save anywhere at any time, plus videos and "collectible pictures" for fans. But, there seems to be something they aren't telling us; check out the pic from Sonic & Knuckles; could this version introduce some new form of co-op or competition between Sonic and his friendly rival, Knuckles? We'll have to wait and see. Read More

Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection Unlockables Revealed

I've heard varying things about the quality of Backbone Entertainment's ports, so I'm hoping that they do right by the vast collection of ports being included in Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection. Gaming Bits learned of what the unlockable titles in the collection will be, which just sweetens the deal all the more... especially after they do the math: $30 divided by 49 games comes out to about 60 cents a game! Sounds good to me, provided the ports are solid. Check out the full list after the cut. Read More

Play By Microsoft's Rules and Get a Free XBLA Game

Microsoft's got itself a pretty nifty deal for those of you who are about to unwrap a new Xbox 360 console this holiday season and join the legion of Xbox Live members, or perhaps for those who might be looking to re-up their Gold Xbox Live memberships. How does a free XBLA game, from a roster of five titles selected by Microsoft, sound to you as a bonus for signing up for 12 months of Xbox Live? There are a few small hoops to jump through as with any promotion, but nothing that should be a dealbreaker for anyone. Full details after the jump. Read More

SEGA Announces Compilation of 40 Classics, Including Sonic, Alex Kidd and More

SEGA announced today that it will be releasing a compilation of 40 of its greatest games, called Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection, on both Xbox 360 and PS3 during the spring of 2009. I'm not quite sure why the name "Sonic" is in the title if the compilation has more than just Sonic games. My only guess is that SEGA's trying to capitalize on the poor hedgehog. Whatever the case, this is likely to be a must-have for old-school SEGA fans, as long as developer Backbone Entertainment does a good job porting these classics. So far, the diagnosis is good. All the titles will run in 720p. After the cut, you'll find a full list of the games included in the compilation. Read More
