NPD August 2010 Sales Figures, the Industry Suffers Another Down Month

Welcome to another installment of "That Game Sold How Many, Now?!" or as it is known in gamer's parlance the monthly NPD numbers. The industry as a whole can't seem to string together a pair of wins, as it is down 10% this month compared to the same time in 2009.  As has become common in the month's where the industry has lost steam compared to 2009, Nintendo is the primary culprit. Both the DS and the Wii suffered drops compared to August 2009. Meanwhile, the Playstation 3 and especially the Xbox 360 both earned some hearty gains.  The software: 1. Madden NFL 11 (Electronic Arts, Xbox 360)  920,800 2. Madden NFL 11 (Electronic Arts, PlayStation 3)  893,600 3. Super Mario Galaxy 2 (Nintendo, Wii)  124,600 4. Mafia II (Take 2 Interactive, Xbox 360)  121,600 5. New Super Mario Bros. (Nintendo, DS)  110,400 6. New Super Mario Bros. Wii (Nintendo) 7. Mafia II (Take 2 Interactive, PS3) 8. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (Activision Blizzard, Xbox 360) 9. NCAA Football 11 (Electronic Arts, Xbox 360) 10. Wii Fit Plus (Nintendo) Hardware and more analysis after the jump. Sports Sunday: Hands on With FIFA 11\'s Creation Centre

FIFA 11 doesn't arrive in stores until the end of the month, but this week beta access to FIFA's Creation Centre opened up. The idea behind Creation Centre is that it will allow players to create football stars and their own unique teams to use in the game.    One of the areas that the FIFA team determined they were still behind PES in was in the customization department, and Creation Centre is FIFA's attempt to finally beat PES in that category as well, as they have literally surpassed the Konami offering in every other category.    Does it hold up? Read our preview after the break.   Read More

Sports Sunday: Opening Week is Here

Ahhh...college football, the roar of the crowds, the bands playing fight songs, hot dogs cooking on grills, students getting trashed and painting themselves, and of course, lopsided first week games against FCS opponents. It's back, the excellent college football season replete with rivalries, craziness, and of course, the constant threat that any loss crushes national championship ambitions.  With the beginning of a new season come great games, but also an increase in my play of the latest version of NCAA Football. Why? Passion baby. Hit the break to read what I'm talking about.   Read More

Sports Sunday: Cheaters v. Purists

As everyone who reads this site regularly knows, I’m a stick jockey. I love sports games, and that’s why every Sunday is sports game Sunday at Kombo. I love the thrill of competition, and hey, let’s be honest, part of the thrill in playing sports games is, like in any game, pretending you’re something you aren’t. I always create a version of myself to put on a team, and I love playing through Be A Pro, Virtual Pro, and other examples of the game types that blend sports game and RPG. I increase my player’s skills over time and become a superstar, controlling only my player and no one else on the field. I also love taking command of an entire team and playing against opponents online, and here’s where the kicker comes in: every once in a while you play a game that just ruins the online experience. July NPD: 360 Takes Over First, StarCraft and NCAA Rule Software

For the first time in years, the top-selling console in the monthly NPD rankings isn't one manufactured by Nintendo. Bolstered by a price drop and a slick new redesign, the Xbox 360 muscled its way to the tops of the charts for hardware in the month of July, selling an impressive 444,000 units. This marks the first time the 360 has hit the top spot since September 2007, where it got a similar boost thanks to the release of Halo 3. Don't feel sorry for Nintendo, however. They still took second and third place for the month, with the DS selling 398,000 units and the Wii bringing in another 254,000. The PS3 sold 215,000 units, while the PSP continued to peter along with sales of 84,000 units. As for software, the big sellers both involved rushes - of the pass and Zergling varieties. Read More
