Reboot: Hitting the Reset Button on Gaming's Core Franchises

As this gaming generation wears on, game publishers are trying to give long-standing franchises a boost. In many cases, rather than simply releasing HD versions of existing franchises, they are deciding to "reboot" them instead - retconning the series from scratch and adding new elements while attempting to retain the core characteristics that made the franchises successful in the first place. No DLC for Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe

Downloadable content has become a quick way for companies to make money in fighting games. Whether it be Street Fighter IV's costumes that were available shortly after the game's release, or charging $5 for one fighter in Soulcalibur IV, rarely has there been a fighting game without some sort of DLC. Looking to break that trend, Ed Boon announced via Twitter today that there will be no DLC fighters released for Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe despite being "just about done" with the first batch. Boon and his team have hinted about releasing mysteriously absent popular Mortal Kombat fighters, such as Kung Lao and Doomsday, in the past. Today however, Boon said on his Twitter account that despite being almost finished with fighters, it looks like they will never be released. - Excited about MK9 and WB, but wish we could have released DLC for MKvsDC. Here's a peek..According to Boon, he doesn't see any fighters joining the roster of Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe. A shame for such a great game. Read More

Random Video of the Day 2: Batman vs. E3

Remember the time Batman took on the DC Universe? That didn't exactly go so well for him. But now, he's back... or someone else from Barely Digital playing the gravelly-voiced Dark Knight, and this time he's headed for Californ-i-a for the Electronic Entertainment Expo. And guess which game just happens to be on display there? Hint: It's not Mortal Kombat. Some of the younger folks reading this might not remember, but once upon a time in Batman's history, he wasn't all dark and brooding. In fact, seeing him walking around like a celebrity in broad daylight was more the norm. And in the world of comic books and cartoons, it somehow worked. Fortunately, we now have this video to show us just how hilariously absurd the idea really is. Read More

Capcom 'Won't Rule Out' Stateside Tatsunoko Release

Six months ago, Capcom's Christian Svensson said he was "working on" bringing the company's Japanese Wii fighter Tatsunoko vs. Capcom stateside. Today, he gave an update. He's still working on it. "We are still actively working on having that happen," says Svensson, Capcom's vice president of business development and strategic planning. "I can't say it's happening definitively. I couldn't give you a time frame, but as badly as the fans want it, we want to bring it." Released in Japan last December, Tatsunoko vs. Capcom is a crossover fighting game similar to Midway's Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe. It pits classic Capcom mascots such as Ryu, Morrigan Aensland and Viewtiful Joe against characters from Japanese animation studio Tatsunoko. According to Svensson, licensing and resource issues are significant obstacles in bringing Tatsunoko vs. Capcom to North America. Licensing Tatsunoko properties outside of Japan is a difficult process, he says, and because the game's development team is working on new projects, gathering the necessary resources for an American localization would be an equally daunting task. Still, the fan-friendly Svensson is hopeful. "Do not rule it out. That is all I can say right now." Read More
