Found In Translation: The State of Import Gaming

A long, long time ago, on an archipelago far, far away, console gaming was revived from the brink of obsolescence. The time was the early 1980s, and the place was Japan. After Atari crashed the console market via over-saturation in the US, Nintendo managed to reinvigorate it in its home country of Japan, in the US, and around the world. With this gaming renaissance coming from a foreign country, a new issue arose; an issue that is still relevant to this day to a small, but growing, number of gamers: game importing. Games are imported for a variety of reasons: wider selection of titles (as many games simply do not make the trip overseas for economic reasons), special freebies or collectibles included in copies of foreign releases, original language tracks, and early releases of titles (many games release in the market they are developed in first, with other regions following later). Even cost can sometimes be a factor, with some games selling cheaply in certain regions and more expensive in other regions around the world. Read More

Amazon.com PS3 Gold Box and Deals for Xbox 360, DS

Amazon has whipped up another video game-themed Gold Box today, with the item of the day being Assassin's Creed II for $39.78, 34 percent off the regular price of $59.99. So far, all deals on Grand Theft Auto IV and inFamous have been claimed, but there are still several more hints which have yet to be revealed for the rest of the day. 11am PST's hint says "Get ready to rumble in this wrestling blockbuster," leading me to believe it would be WWE Smackdown vs. Raw 2010. 1pm PST says "Fight as you favorite Jedi or clone troopers," which obviously narrows it down. Media: New Gameplay Footage of Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep

This is a short video showcasing the three playable characters in Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep: (in order of appearance) Ventus, Terra, and Aqua. This game looks gorgeous, especially by PSP standards. It seems like the graphics are on par with Kingdom Hearts II. Though the PSP doesn't have the resolution of the PS2, the new engine makes you feel like it does. Another thing I noticed is that there are small frame-rate issues. If this problem is because of the game itself, instead of how this video was recorded, Square Enix still has some time to polish the game up before January. Read More
