Confessions of a PSPgo Owner

That’s right, I admit it. I caved in to my techno-gadget-loving desires and shelled out the $250 for another PSP when my current PSP works just fine. It’s white and sparkly and cute, and I just want to hug it and squeeze it and name it George. But before the sexist comments come out that I only bought it for the girlish reason of being cute, I really did have reasons for doing so, and it’s because of these reasons that I do not regret my purchase. Well, that’s not totally true. I do miss that $250 that could have been used on other games. Read More

Arc Rise Fantasia Review

The Wii is well known for several different types of games, but the role-playing game (RPG) has not been one of them. When Ignition Entertainment announced over a year ago that a brand new RPG was coming to the Wii, it brewed hope that maybe the Wii could actually get a decent RPG since Tales of Symphonia: Dawn of the New World flopped horrendously. Unfortunately for both the Wii and RPG fans, Arc Rise Fantasia has dashed these hopes into the ground. Read More

Final Fantasy IX Hitting PSN Next Week...In Europe

Why does Europe get to have all the fun? First they get Vagrant Story on the PSN and now Final Fantasy IX? Why is North America getting screwed over all of the sudden? Do we not rule the free world? Do we not have the biggest steaks, cars and implants? To quote Ron Burgundy, "I'm kind of a big deal, people know me." Feel snubbed with us after the break. Read More

Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker Scores 40/40 in Famitsu

It took over five years, but finally, Sony's PSP has its first 40/40 from vaunted Japanese gaming magazine Famitsu. Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker, the latest in Hideo Kojima's magnum opus, is awarded the honor in the latest issue. While there's little doubt that the title isn't going to be worth checking out, and with all respect to Kojima-san, there is an unfortunate reality here, which is that the once-rare score from the magazine is nowhere near as prestigious as it once was. Square-Enix Continues to Succeed Thanks to Eidos

While the past several months have been quite trying for Japanese game developers, Square-Enix has defied all odds. With the success of both Dragon Quest IX and Final Fantasy XIII, Square is by no means struggling. On top of that, the recently acquired Eidos released Batman: Arkham Asylum last year to much critical acclaim. In fact, net sales for the Japanese based company are up 31 percent with net income up by 48 percent. Square-Enix president Yoichi Wada made the following statement regarding the current situation at Square: "Aimed at mid-and long-term growth for the Square Enix Group, we have made solid progress in our business plan set out at the beginning of the fiscal year. We are pleased with the success of our Final Fantasy XIII launch in Japan on December 17, where we successfully shipped 1.8 million units in this market with a PlayStation 3 installed base of 4 million. And, through our improved localization systems, we were able to set a March launch date in North America and Europe." With Arkham Asylum 2 on the horizon and Final Fantasy XIII set for an international release in March, continuing success is certainly in Square's future. Read More

New Super Mario Bros. Wii Get's a 40/40

Last week's issue of Japanese Famitsu Weekly awarded New Super Mario Bros. Wii with a perfect score. This adds to the game's positive critical reception as well as Famitsu's own quickly-growing pantheon of perfect score awards. With perfect scores, the four Famitsu reviewers for New Super Mario Bros. Wii praised pretty much every aspect of the game from the singleplayer to the multiplayer. First and foremost however was the responsiveness of that game's controls. New Super Mario Bros. Wii is the first traditional Mario game and the second game featuring the character Mario to get a perfect 40/40 from Famitsu. Famitsu has now awarded more perfect scores in 2009 than any previous year. Read More

Square Enix Hoping To Break Six Million with Final Fantasy XIII

Final Fantasy is known worldwide as Square Enix's most prolific franchise, so there was little doubt that the company has high hopes for the 13th installment. In an interview with Kotaku Japan (translated by Kotaku proper), Square Enix president Yoichi Wada stated that the company desires to sell more than 6 million copies of the anticipated RPG, which would surpass the 6 million sold by Final Fantasy XII. For reference, Square Enix's other major Japanese release of 2009, Dragon Quest IX, has sold over 3.7 million. Assuming that Square Enix is referring to worldwide sales, they should have little trouble meeting this goal, especially with the game being on multiple platforms in North America and Europe.
