EA: PS3 Never A Consideration for C&C: Red Alert 3

Despite announcing Command & Conquer: Red Alert 3 for PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 in February, EA is now claiming that the "PS3 was not in consideration" when deciding which platforms to develop for. A few weeks ago, EA announced that it was halting development on the (now supposed) PS3 game in order to focus "resources on development for PC and Xbox 360 which will ship simultaneously this autumn." This begs the question – was there ever a PS3 version in development at all? "We weren't planning on PS3 for Tiberium Wars or Kane's Wrath," C&C producer Jim Vessella told CVG. "We really wanted to focus on Xbox 360 and master that platform before diving into another one." "We're definitely considering the PS3 for future versions of our games and future versions of Command and Conquer," Vessella conceded. And though he doesn't have any "specifics" on when that might happen, "the PS3 is definitely successful and we really want to give that platform love in the future." Read More

Console RTS Design "Still not Close to PC" Says C&C Developer

When it comes to playing RTS games on consoles, most would agree that it's very difficult to recreate the same experience you get when playing on the PC. Electronic Arts' Chris Corry agrees with this sentiment and believes that consoles still have a lot of catching up to do in that regard. "Console RTS design has come a long way, but I don't know if you will be able to lead design of a true RTS, which is so inherently reliant on the mouse and keyboard combination, on the console," stated Corry. "It's one of the reasons we don't do cross platform play - the way RTS' are meant to be played, the PC guys would be so much faster." Ever since the genre of RTS was introduced to the console player back in the PS1 era with Command & Conquer series, interest has continued to grow. This has lead to more time and effort being pured into research and development of what makes a good console RTS and with Kane's Wrath, Corry feels they have raised the bar to the next level. Command & Conquer: Red Alert 3 Announced for 360, PS3, PC

Following a seven-year hiatus, EA has announced the impending arrival of Command & Conquer: Red Alert 3 at some point "later this year" on the PC, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3. "Developed by EA Los Angeles, Red Alert 3 breaks new ground in the RTS genre, featuring a fully co-operative campaign while bringing back the series' light-hearted style and classic, action-oriented gameplay." "The Red Alert games are known for challenging hardcore strategy gamers with depth, variety, and innovative gameplay. But they also belong to that rare breed of games that can draw in more casual players with their over-the-top stories, instantly accessible mechanics, and straight-to-the-fun design," said Mike Verdu, General Manager of EALA. "With Red Alert 3, our team is continuing that proud tradition by introducing genre-first features like co-operative campaign play, which rewards veterans and casual players alike. In Red Alert 3, friends and family can always have your back!" Read More
