'You Can't Do Music Creation Half-Arsed,' Says Harmonix

After getting his hands on the creation mode from Guitar Hero World Tour, Rock Band 2 Lead Designer Dan Teasdale would very much like to add something along those lines to his game, but isn't going to just copycat the idea to get it in, as he wants the experience to be "authentic." No "half-arsing" it here:"We've dabbled around with stuff like that before, with Frequency and Amplitude, and we learned a lot of lessons from it. The main one is that you can't do it half-arsed. If you want to do a way to let players create and distribute music, you have to go all-in - not just do it as a bullet on the back of a box. We actually want to find a way to for people to create music and express themselves, but when we do we want to make sure that people can sing, or the songs can be longer than three minutes, or that you can have more than 1200 notes, or that you're not tied to some dodgy sample somewhere. We want to make sure it's an authentic experience and it fits on the platform. -- Dan Teasdale, to VideoGamer.comFor those who have played with Guitar Hero World Tour's creation, how do you think Rock Band could improve it? Analyst: Next Tony Hawk Game to Come with Skateboard Peripheral

We all know that Guitar Hero has changed the way in which music and video games work together. But might it have affected how skateboarding video games work, too? One analyst believes so.We also view it as highly likely that the game will include some sort of skateboard peripheral with all SKUs when it ships, given the massive success (and higher price points and profitability) of Activision Blizzard's Guitar Hero franchise. The extra year of development time and the opportunity for consumers to shake off franchise fatigue could contribute to better unit sales than the franchise has enjoyed in recent years. -- Dough Creutz, Cowan and Company Analyst via ShacknewsThey note that the only Tony Hawk game coming out this year, Tony Hawk's Motion for the Nintendo DS, will come with a motion sensor add-on, which could be taken as further evidence of a peripheral-filled future for Hawk. The next title in the series, Tony Hawk's Huck Jam, Adrenaline and Amplitude, is slated for Xbox 360 and PS3, but not Wii. There's little doubt Wii will also get something, quite likely under a different title, and may use the Balance Board. Which leaves one to wonder if that is the mechanic which Activision Blizzard would hope to incorporate into the other versions, or something more elaborate. Read More

WipEout HD: Color Explosion of Pure Adrenaline

Sometimes game franchises are known for a single trait that they excel at. In Mario's case, it's platforming. In Gran Turismo, it's driving. For WipEout, it is insane speed. We have been treated to a few new WipEout games on the PSP but the Sony consoles were neglected with the futuristic racer. That has all changed with WipEout HD. Read More
